Pre-press is an essential step in any printing process, and the wide format department is no exception. As a printing company, you want to ensure that your pre-press department is equipped with the right tools and personnel to produce high-quality wide format prints.

In the wide format department, pre-press refers to the stage of the printing process where digital files are prepared for printing on a large format printer. This process involves several steps, including file preparation, proofing, file setup, and production.

FILE PREPARATION

File preparation is the first step in the pre-press process for large format printing. This step involves ensuring that the digital files are in the correct format, resolution, and color space for the intended print size. Typically, large format prints require a higher resolution than standard prints to ensure that the final output is clear and sharp.

If any of these requirements are not met, our customers can provide corrected art or improved assets. If customers cannot provide these, our designers are available to make those changes.

PROOFING

Proofing is the most important step in the pre-press process for large format printing. The first proof we will send is a digital proof for the customer. These will contain final file sizing, necessary changes, and mock-ups of their art if needed.

The second proof will be printed on the same material as the final print or on a similar material to simulate the final output. This step is critical because it allows you to catch any errors before final set up, production or installation.

FILE SET UP

File set up is the final step before production. The pre-press team will group files according to material and set files up to fit onto the different types of material used by our flat bed and roll printers. Cut lines will also be added for files that need to be cut to a specific shape. Files will also be changed to fit specific ink types and arrangements.

PRODUCTION AND INSTALLATION

The final step will see the pre-press team passing off the final files to the production team. The pre-press team will also work with production to ensure no additional changes need to made during production. The pre-press team will also working with the install team to help prevent any unforeseen issues when it comes to installs on vehicle wraps and any other installations.

In conclusion, pre-press is an essential step in the large format printing process. A well-equipped pre-press department will ensure that your large format prints are high-quality, accurate, and consistent. By focusing on file preparation, proofing, file setup, and production you can ensure that your customers receive the best possible product.
